12th Annual Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure

Sharon Johnson, Executive Director, Komen Central Valley: Fresno, CA, United States; After my surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer ended in 2000, I participated in the 2001 Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure. I met a young 34 year old single mother who was battling Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. We became very close friends. Diane lost her life in less than a year. In that short time I was humbled by her ordeal as I learned from her true strength and courage. This was my first encounter with a breast cancer patient under the age of 40. This young, cancer-ridden mother was the epitome of living each day to the fullest. She inspired me to become more than her friend. I believe she fully intended for me to be her voice. I decided to volunteer for the Komen Central Valley Affiliate. My journey led me to the Board of Directors and onward to Komen’s first hire; Executive Director. I have the privilege of working with the most dedicated volunteers in the Central Valley. Their tireless efforts and activism deeply touch me as does the support from our sponsors and community.
